Bahia Honda is a unique and important ecosystem with highly valuable natural capital stocks and ecosystem services that need to continue to be protected and enhanced: - A pristine natural environment with limited negative human impact
- Proximity and the primary land connection to the UNESCO protected Coiba National Park
- Deep water bay and coral corridor which provides ideal habitat for fish stocking of the ecosystem
- Extensive mangroves provide filtration of the bay, coral and carbon sequestration.
- One of the few places that contains original communities of indigenous flora and fauna
- Species such as migratory humpback whales, dolphins, turtles, tuna, and sailfish are present
- The majority of the bay is under one holding with ongoing research into ocean & terrestrial impact
- The ability to positively uplift a poor rural community through viable eco-tourism
We have collaborated with the Smithsonian for many years developing and undertaking experimentation with exceptional tree species which significantly enhance aboveground biomass compared to control plots in secondary forest at Bahia Honda by recording planted trees and naturally recruiting woody plants. In experimental plantation plots, we augmented natural secondary succession through supplemental plantings of native species in Panama whose attributes maximize carbon sequestration. The success of these experiments is helping to drive carbon capture which we hope will help in return drive the local economy and impact favourably on our community. Bahia Honda offers the closest land to Coiba that could be developed to this protected area. A Master Plan has identified 12 possible areas that could be developed for prime ‘Legacy’ residences. The owners also have their residence within the bay. |
